Debating Society


There is a saying , “the art of debating is not convincing the crowd that you are right, its more about convincing the crowd that the opponent is wrong.”

So it has become a norm that every college must have a debating society, and NIT Durgapur too boasts a group of extraordinary and talented individuals who show just how capable they are.now NIT Durgapur is a technical college so most of you are probably wondering as to what importance does a non-tech club like the Debating Society holds in this college. Trust me, I had the same dilemma , but once you get accustomed to this place you find out that debate is one of the few ways to freely express yourself. Never before seen open elections took place on the 22nd of February in 2017. The usual gruesome and haphazard polling and publicity was nowhere to be seen though! The Debating Society  successfully conducted the first presidential debate in an open and transperant manner, which was a huge success . whats more astounding is that they managed to set a hold  on this college in just a year in its forming as it was formed in the latter half of 2015. With Ankit Verma as the president and anant srivavstava as the convener , the Debating Society has flourished in the little time they have been here. They have been recognized as an official club of NIT Durgapur in just two years of its founding .




The Debating Society is well aware of the situation in the college and often holds open debates on the controversies plaguing the college and country as well.  This move helps in strengthening the bond of the student with the college and also helps them develop on a personal level as they learn to voice their opinion which is integral in a democracy. They are also aware of the linguistic barriers that are there in the college and “language-no-bar”debates where one is allowed to debate in any language they choose provided that the opponent and a majority of the audience are able to understand it.
Now that Debating Society has been recognized as an official club of NIT Durgapur, we have a few things that wed love to do. Some of it include:-

  1. Inter -NIT debates , in which the best debaters from various NITs will come together under one roof and go all out against each other, to bag the first position.
  2. We plan to host cultural events .
  3. Open debates with faculty on the pressing issues regarding the college and the grievances of the students.

The Truth Shall Set You Free

National Institute of Technology , Durgapur is an esteemed institute of national importance, Formerly known as the regional engineering college ( which is highlighted right at the entrance, a little more boldly than the actual name !). Established is the year 1960 , and later converted to an NIT in 2003, NIT DGP is one of the oldest Institutions. Now all of this can be found on Wikipedia and other informative sites , but alas none of this really shed light on the true nature of this “esteemed” college . Fellow first years , I formally welcome you to a rollercoaster of a ride in this college! Let us start with the hostels. Every hostel (or Hall of residence, yes its that sophisticated) bears the name of some well known Bengali ( duh! ). My advice to you? Remember the name! apart from this bizarre tradition , you’ll find that the numbering and placement of these hostels make no sense whatsoever ( which is a recurring theme in this college). Sports are often referred to as the opium of the masses. It’s simple- Pick your preferred team on the basis of varied criteria, ranging from analysed and collated performance data all the way to the exact number of bodacious cheerleaders.  Now support this team to death and your 2-step program is complete. Unknown foreign players from distant unimaginable lands become household names. They’re praised in bundles for their success and insulted in truckloads for their failures. They’re boycotted, railed upon and in some cases even physically harmed in the process of proving your fandom.
